December 14th – Advent Day Nineteen.

LUKE’S CHRISTMAS GOSPEL OF JESUS: A 30-Day Christmas-Time Devotional.

Skipping for Sheer Joy.

Luke 1: 44 (MsgB)

[44] “The moment the sound of your greeting entered my ears, the babe in my womb skipped like a lamb for sheer joy.”

Sometimes, we can become so familiar with the biblical accounts of the birth of Christ, we will tend to overlook the amazing prophetic details that are contained in every aspect of Jesus’ advent story.

Here, for example, in the middle of the world’s first Christmas carol (as I like to call it), Elizabeth sings out about the way her baby (John, the Baptist) skips like a lamb inside her womb as she hears the voice of Mary greeting her on this special day.

Now, some might say, well, of course, we all know that after about 20 weeks in the womb, it’s customary for babies to occasionally jostle or jump in the mother’s stomach. But, could it be that Luke (keep in mind that he’s a doctor) is passing on to his readers not just a pediatrician’s report, but also yet another prophetic promise from the Old Testament that was being fulfilled that day?

I find it interesting, for example, that David, the shepherd king of the Old Testament, in one of his songs (Psalm 22: 30-31), sings out these prophetic lyrics . . .

“Our children and their children will get in on this, as the word is passed along from parent to child. Babies not yet conceived will hear the good news—that God does what He says.”

Isn’t it interesting that Luke’s writings (as well as the writings of Matthew, Mark, and John), telling us all about Jesus of Nazareth, are called gospels? As you probably know, the word ‘gospel’ means ‘good news.’ So, just as David prophetically saw it, John the Baptist, as a six-month old embryo inside Elizabeth, jumps for joy upon the hearing of Mary’s ‘good news’ about the soon-coming baby Jesus!

May it be true today that at the hearing of the good news of Jesus’ advent, all of us, and our children (born and yet to be born) will “skip like lambs with sheer joy” knowing that God always does what He says!

Messiah, our Rescuing King, is coming! His advent has now come! Joy to the World!

My prayer: Thank You, Lord, for the sheer joy that is contained within the good news message of Jesus and His advent. May Your Holy Spirit indwell and empower me to break through my stone-cold heart so that the joy of my salvation might once more bring a child-like faith and celebration into my life. For Your name’s sake. Amen.

My questions to ponder: So, when was the last time I was overcome with ‘sheer joy’ at the mention of Jesus’ name? How has life stolen away that sheer joy? What might it look like for me to ‘skip like a lamb’ in the midst of my every-day, humdrum life? Am I open to the work of the Holy Spirit that can indwell and empower me to such outlandish joy?

So what is God speaking to you today? Are you practicing the Kingdom presence of God?
